Build real Playwright tests without writing TypeScript by hand.

StepForge is a self-hosted web app for assembling runnable Playwright test scripts from structured form fields. Fill in a locator and an action or assertion, chain steps into reusable blocks, and run the real thing — headless, end to end — straight from the browser.

With the application you have a full suite of options to build elaborate tests which can be called via trigger URLs. This lets you run these tests via cronjobs to automate testing on a regular basis or run (groups of) tests manually, for instance, right after a new release.

Keep track of the test result via a simple or elaborate email message and/or view the screenshots made during testing to see what goes on while the test runs.

Not a session recorder

You browse the target app yourself and copy what you find — a URL, an element's text or id — into a form. No click-instrumentation, no codegen magic, just plain fields you fill in by hand.

Blocks, Groups, Tests

Build one atomic step at a time, chain steps into reusable Block Groups, then assemble Tests from blocks and groups. Edit a shared block once, update it everywhere it's used.

Real, headless runs

Every save generates a genuine Playwright spec and runs it for real via @playwright/test — pass/fail, output, and screenshots, not a simulation.

Self-hosted, login optional

One instance per person or company. Run it on your own machine or private server via Docker — your test definitions never leave your infrastructure. Password protection can be switched on if you want it, but either way that server should only be reachable by your own team, never exposed to the open internet.
